About

About IEP Parent Tools

Plain-language tools that help parents understand their child's IEP, prepare for meetings, and check that the plan is being carried out.

Why this site exists

An IEP is a lot of paper. You should be able to tell what it says.

An IEP can run to dozens of pages of goals, services, codes and dates, written in language most parents never use anywhere else. A meeting is scheduled, decisions are made in an hour, and a year goes by before the next one.

IEP Parent Tools exists to make that easier to manage. We make practical tools and guides that help you understand what your child's IEP says, get ready for meetings, and keep track of what happens in between.

We write for parents, not professionals. Our free tools are meant to solve the problem they describe, without holding the useful part back.

How we work

What to expect from anything we publish

Plain language

We explain the terms schools use, then get out of the way. If a sentence needs a law degree to follow, we rewrite it.

Sources you can check

When we describe a federal rule, we name the section and link to the regulation so you can read it yourself.

Federal and state kept apart

Federal law sets the floor, and states add their own rules and timelines. We say which is which, and where to find your state's version.

Made to be used

Our forms can be typed into or printed, with room to write and worked examples that show what a finished page looks like.

Calm by design

Our letters and steps start with a clear, friendly question and move up one step at a time.

Honest about limits

We don't promise outcomes, and we say so when a question belongs with your state's parent center, an advocate or an attorney.

What IEP Parent Tools is not

IEP Parent Tools is an educational and organizational resource. It is not a law firm, we are not your advocate or attorney, and nothing on this site is legal advice about your child or your situation.

If you need help with a specific problem, every state has a federally funded Parent Training and Information Center. Its help is free, and it knows your state's rules. You can find yours here.
